Seven life-sized sculptures in seven Ukrainian cities on behalf of the 30th anniversary of Ukrainian independence
role: lead artists, generative design, concept & code
On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Uraine’s Independence, the sounds of seven cities of Ukraine were recorded and transformed into art objects. Each of seven scuptures were installed in the sights of Odesa, Dnipro, Lviv, Mariupol, Kharkiv and Crimea (Crimean Platform office) and Kyiv became the final city of synthesis of art and technology that unites the sound of Ukraine.
The project brought together 117 incredible people from different professions. Notjustform involved as an artistic partner to develop the concept, process and programs to transform more than 2400 sounds recorded on locations into seven generative forms repoduced in life-scale physical scupltures.
Our process started with analyzing the sounds from the different cities and developing the process to turn these sounds into buildable geometry.
We ended up using touchdesigner as our main environment to program the full process from file management to generating the geometries as well as 2D-visualizations to be shown on the exhibition.
In the end we followed the concept to letting the main shape evolve along the rails of a combined soundscape while single sounds would be randomly added to its surface.
The final shapes of the physical sculptures are freezed moments of virtual lifeforms fed with the characteristic sounds of vibrant Ukrainian cities in 2021.
The exhibition “Sounds of the City” premiered at the National Center “Ukrainian House” from November 19 to December 1st in 2022.
